Charlotte Neighborhood Closet Design

Charlotte's neighborhoods were built in very different eras, and that shapes what a closet can do. Dilworth was begun in 1891 as Charlotte's first streetcar suburb, and Myers Park followed in 1911, so many homes there were built long before today's wardrobes, shoe collections, and habit of keeping more in the bedroom closet. Ballantyne, on the southern edge of Mecklenburg County, was developed much more recently, and newer homes there can offer larger primary suites.

In an older Dilworth or Myers Park home, the challenge is often a modest original closet, or one changed by past renovations. Double hanging, adjustable shelves, and better use of upper walls can add capacity without changing the footprint. In a newer Ballantyne or SouthPark-area home with a large primary walk-in, the question is usually how to organize generous space with defined zones for hanging, shoes, drawers, and occasional storage while keeping the room comfortable to move through.

Storage problems rarely stop at the bedroom door. Pantry shelving can organize food and small appliances, laundry and mudroom cabinetry can give supplies and everyday items a defined place, and garage storage can take on tools and equipment so they stop competing with clothing for space.

For a useful first step, photograph the closet before you empty it. The places where clothing stacks up, shoes spill over, or shelves go unused show which parts of the original layout no longer match the way you live.
